6 Ways to Consistently Discipline your Child.

Nurturing a child is a no joke. Honestly, D has tested my patience millions times already. It is true that no parenting books nor advices from other parents can teach or prepare you. As a parent to a three year old active, curious, smart and clever boy has always make me and daddy R contemplate if we are doing the right way. I shared how naughty and bully D is. Someone told me he's just discovering so let him be. But some instances are alarming like;

1. Even if you tell him "no" he will still do it. Tell him otherwise, he will stop.
2. If he's eating something prohibited (well at least when I am at home) you will see him hiding under the table, eating or licking lollipops and candies.
3. He says some bad words. Yes playmates' influence.
4. He will not share anything to anyone.
5. So stubborn.
6. and many more in an endless list.

There are lots of factors, including the "grandparents" love, but as a parent I feel that we have a serious responsibility in raising a discipline and well rounded child. But how? Oh well Mr. Google always has the answers. I came upon BabyCentre and it is a good guide in parenting. So I would like to share some ideas on how to consistently discipline your child. I hope this will help struggling parents like us.

1. Choose your priorities
If you try to tackle every discipline challenge at the same time, you'll be too overwhelmed to stick with it. So choose just one or two to focus on with special diligence and attention. It might be defiance, refusing to go to bed or demanding sweets. When these situations arise, be on top of them every single time. Don't give in and don't reward them.

It took me a while to realise that D is just a child and can't  multi-task yet. He cannot digest all the sermons and a lot of do's and don'ts.   So I did it one at a time. For a week we focused on toilet training, next week on putting back his toys to the basket after playtime, then on wearing slippers at home and list go on. The downside of this is that we can't process bad things that he did that is not the focus. Just make sure you put those issue on the waitlist. And I admit, sometimes I resort into scaring nor bribbing him when I want things to be done quick, which is a no no.

2. Be prepared for the long haul
It can take time to tackle misbehaviour. Put yourself in your child's shoes: "Mummy never used to really mean that she wanted me to brush my teeth until she started shouting. Now she means it the first time she asks. I'm confused." Change can happen, but probably not as quickly as you'd like it to.

D learns fast. So oftentimes I expect him to learn good behaviors and attitudes fast as well. Then I forgot again that I am raising a toddler, and his learning curve is still different. Yes, waiting for the process can test our patience, but, but we have to be. And always remember our parents, nor grandparents favorite line "ganyan ka din nung bata ka" .

3. Get the timing right
It's tempting to try a crash course in manners just before a birthday or family visit, but you'll have better success if you choose a time that's more stable and predictable. Everyone needs time, structure and no extra stress to practise consistency — especially you. So don't jump into a new discipline strategy just before a new baby arrives, or school starts, or if you’re moving house.

Never argue or try to teach your child when he's sleepy, hungry or watching his favorite cartoons, I tell you you will never win. Strategies when is the right time of the day your child will be cooperative. Yes, disciplining a chiild can also be like planning for a major project.

4. Expect resistance
Your child will challenge you no matter how consistent you are. Or he may respond well from the start, only to fall back into old habits. Don't despair – this kind of periodic testing is normal. Once you accept these temporary regressions, they'll be less frustrating, allowing you to stay on track.

Teaching a threenager means endless reasoning and conversations of whys and why nots. I got use to it that I now have my back up plans. Never give up.

5. Don't try to go it alone
Once you commit to a consistency campaign, get backup. Your partner and your child's teachers, carers and grandparents can all reinforce your efforts to stop behaviour problems.

Make sure you inform the rest of the household what you are training or teaching to your child. This is avoid confussion and to also involve everyone in the process. This can also be a warning to grandparents that keeps spoiling their second babies. And on occassions that you loose your patience, there will be someone who be in control of the situation.

6. Bend the rules occasionally
Accidental inconsistency – when you're too  busy or preoccupied to enforce a rule – sends the message that it isn't really important to you, which encourages your child to ignore it too. But intentional inconsistency – when you let your child know in advance that you’ve chosen to make an exception – can actually strengthen a rule. For example: "As you'll be spending time with Nana and Grandad this week, you don’t have to tidy your bedroom until next week."

D loves his lolo and daddy R because they are the ones breaking the rules once D cries or make lambing. Me? I try so had not to give in because I want to reinforce discipline to D, but during those times that he's extra sweet and obidient I also give him a chocoloate surprise. I call that conditioning surprise. Haha

---
I use these points as guide, but remember that every child is different. So goodluck to us parents.

D as in Dal-Dal

Looking back, when D turned 1 year old I am silently worrying about his language development. Ganun yata talaga kapag nanay ka, you worry at simpliest and little things about your baby. D called me “mimi” at 15 months, so I am so worried about language delay, defects and etc. I turned again to Mr. Google and asked him lots of questions. Haha the sensible answer I got is the cliché “babies have different stages of development” so I threw the milestones chart and let baby D be.

And a year after, taadddaaa!!! I have a bully in the making and a sobrang dal-dal na bata. Amidst busy, tiring and stressful days at work, what keeps me sane is the memory of D’s kakulitan. And not only he’s makwento, he can also reason out.

*D asked for dede,
Me: Don’t dede na anak, Bigboy ka na kasi.
D: Goodboy ako.
(So kapag goodboy, kahit bigboy na pwede pa din dumede?)

*Pagdating ko from an out-of-town trip
D: Mommy sakay din ako eyplane (airplane), punta ilo-ilog!
(Ah saan ung ilo-ilog anak?)

*While watching TV, we heard a helicopter..
Me: D look oh, airplane (while looking and pointing at the sky)
D: copter yan! (helicopter)
(Oo nga pala! Helicopter yun!)

*Last night, we look for the stars and moon in the sky
Me: D, count the stars
D: dami yun!
Me: No, lets count the stars…
D: dami nga!
(Haha nga naman, how can he count the stars?)

*While forcing (oo dahil ayaw niya magnap) D to sleep, and I also pretend to be sleeping, dahan dahan siya tumatakas at binubuksan ang door.
Me: D where are you going?
D: Gulat mo ako mommy.
(Ako pa may kasalanan?!)

*While asking him to sleep
Me: Tulog ka na D
D: Gising na ako!
(Hindi pa nga natutulog gising na agad?!)

*We saw a snowman in TV
Me: D look that Olaf!
D: Asan Kristoff?
(Kailangan complete cast sila ng frozen?!)

*We saw toy cars on TV
D: Bili ko yan! Yan! Yan!
Me: Saan pambili mo?
D: Si daddy bili yan!
(haha calling daddy R! ikaw pala bibili e)

*When you ask him something, may default answer nay an
D: Ehhh… kasi…

*At marunong na din siya magsumbong
D: Kulot ako josh!
D: Baho ako sabi ninong I!
D: Takot ako!

*Recently, may kakampi na ako regarding baby no.2 readiness
D: Bunso ako mommy,
Me: No magiging Kuya ka,
D: Kuya bunso ako!
(daddy R I told you we are not yet ready)

*My brilliant idea to use jelly ace to teach him colors kaso,
D: (holding purle jellyace) barney ito
D: (holding green jellyace) baby bop
(Fail! Haha)

*While holding his fake mobile phone
D: Mommy, daddy uwi na!
D: Bubong ko candy donut!
D: Daddy punta opiz (office) ikaw baguio?!

His English language is also growing na he has shorts sentences like;
-       Come on guys!
-       Come here…
-       Want some?
-       Go-nyt (goodnight) guys!
-       I want dede

Four to five years from now, when D can read na, we will read this entry and I am excited on how he will react on his kalokohans, since I am not sure if I will be able to remember all these by that time.

Hay anak, you maybe growing with lots of kakulitan, but mommy’s love for you will never change. Kahit napapadalas na ang punta mo sa corner. You will always be my baby big kuya D!.

Naughty Big D!

Past months was so stressful and busy that I always walk to home tired and stressed. Buti nalang April na and medyo light na and sched namin. Thus, the blogs entries I have today. Biglang bumalik and blogging mojo ko, yun lang nakalimutan ko na ung iba kong dapat posts (looser!) next time I will note them. Anyway, nothing beats D's kalokohan in removing our stress, even daddy R is looking forward to my stories sa kalokohan ng anak niya.

D is into wrestling nowadays, sobrang masakit sa katawan and minsan, nakakasakit na talaga. Ikaw ba naman sipain and daganan ng 12 kilos na bata? naku talaga! Boys and their rough play!

At 26 months, D knows how to make his way kapag pinapagalitan. While I am whining on his throwing incidents, ayan biglang nagtulog-tulugan! Kanino kaya nagmana?!

At dahil terrible two na nga siya, medyo nadadalas na din siya sa naughty corner. But no, wala na effect sa kanya and naughty corner at nakukuha pang magpose at magsmile! #mommyproblems tlaga!

Well, aside from kalikutan, he's being naughty has a positive side. Creativity attack! This rack became his driving buddy! with sounds pa yan!

And look who steals mommy's tupperware in the kitchen to have a hat?!

Speaking of being naughty again, what will you do if your toddler ask for chuckie at 4AM? not only 1 but 2?! Hyper attack na naman maghapon as usual!

And 2 donuts just before bedtime?!

Madami pa yan! and I know mas marami pang darating. As I said, cute pa mga kalokohan niya ngaun, let's see when he grow up kung cute pa yang mga kalokohan na yan! Nonetheless, I will always be here to support you anak, and mommy will everything to be your best ally. Si daddy R nalang and didisiplina saiyo.

Rasing Happy D!

Where did time go?! Last week of March na? Oh my! I haven't posted my month long birthday celebration last February, all my other post are left in the draft, I have tons of stories to share about my family and career life, yet nada! ang mga posts. Tsk! And I am about to celebrate my anniversary in blogging (yes! feeling true blogger lang tlaga!) Ang bilis talaga ng time kapag busy ka. And one of the reasons why I am so busy is spent time reading resources on how to discipline baby D. And I want to share this inforgraphics from lifehacker http://lifehacker.com/this-infographic-reveals-how-to-raise-happy-and-healthy-1542169077

I hope this will help mother's out there!

More post this week! promise!

On Weaning D

Over the holidays, when we meet our relatives they have the same comments for D:

"Anlaki mo na D, awat na"
"D, dapat no more dede ka na"
"Lagyan mo ng sili yan para maawat na, para kumain ng kanin, tataba yan!"

And I am also conditioning D, I talk to him and I always say;

"D, kapag 2 years old ka na no more dede okay? drink nalang milk, milo, eat hotdog, rice, gulay, okay?"

sometimes D will say "Okay!" sometimes he will say "Ayaw!"

And now 11days before his birthday, I am bittersweet in weaning him. I mentioned before that I will try to nurse D as long as he wants. And I still want to, but there are some valid reasons why I am considering weaning him this early.

He's not weaning into solids. When D turned 1 year old, he's 10 kilos, and now that he's turning 2 years old, he's still 10 kilos. I not worried though, kasi he's very active and healthy naman. Our pedia said he's not malnourished, he's healthy so nothing to worry about since he's breastfeed naman. The problem is that ayaw niya kumain ng rice whenever I am around because of "dede". We all know that even breastmilk is the best milk, there are nutrients that a growing (and hyper child) needed that mommy's milk cannot provide.

He's getting so dependent with me. For reasons that I want D to grow up independent. I love how D calls mommy everytime he needed me for dede. I love how we snuggle and hug at night, especially ngaun na malamig. I love how I can kiss D everytime he nurses at hand lang. Pero I want my little boy to grow as a tough man. I have to let go.

Sigmund Freud, Psychosexual Development. This is an offshoot of my weekend classes. Malaki ang bilib ko sa theory ni pareng freud na yan. He says that each stages of development needs to be resolved, otherwise child will be fixated. D is still in the ORAL stage, and the main challenge is weaning. I don't want the effect of fixation in ORAL for baby D. Being talkative and overly vocal is not the trait suited for a man.

Tiredness. Yeah. Katamaran. For two years, I am expressing milk 5 days a week and minimum of 3 times a day using a manual pump. I know I once said that I will never get tired for baby D, but come on! I think I did the best for 2 years for baby D, who is know a little boy. I want my life back. I want my body back. And daddy R wanted my body back also chos! Kidding aside, I wanted a normal life again before having baby number 2. Ayayay!

So there, I think I have enough reasons for weaning D. I already justified the reasons, but I am still having second thoughts. I will miss baby D's clinginess. And I am also afraid baka lumayo ang loob sa akin ni baby when we stop nursing since I am a working mom and I will travel a lot this year. I don't want that. But I want D to grow up. Dilemma.

What will I do?!

3Ds

Hi! ho! yeah, the bad blogger in me strikes again! Yesterday,  I asked R what supplement I need to take para magawa ko lahat ng gagawin ko? he said, "Kiss ko". Haha ang supportive talaga db? Oh well, where else can I find a guy that will love me like what he did noh?! I'm so blessed. I don't have the right to complain.

Speaking of being blessed, I am so thankful na wala akong family na naapektuhan ni Yolanda, its so devastating. Grabe, hindi ko makayang manuod ng news, nakaka-awa. Oh well, this post should be possitive and full of encouragement since yun ang badly needed ko ngaun. If time will allow me, I will donate or personally give some breastmilks sa mga babies thats the only thing I can share aside from prayers.

On a lighter note, baby D is picking up words so fast! and sadly i'm missing most of that moments (nega again!). On days na hindi ako nagmamadali, or maaga ako nakakauwi I get to interact with him.

Me: Daddy Panget
D: Ayaw!
Me: E anu?
D: Bogie! (Pogi)
Me: Ok, mommy panget!
D: hhmmhm
*Amph! may favoritism na agad?! haha

Me: Whats the capital of Philippines?
D: Nila (Manila)
Me: of China?
D: Benjing (Beijing)
Me: of Japan?
D: Koyo (Tokyo)

*Lolo G said, "yan na agad agad alam niya?! hindi pwede ABC or 123 muna?!" Haha kagagawan ko yan!

He's so cute! I swear! kahit anung pagod ko pag uwi ng bahay, nawawala talaga. Baby D is my source of inspiration to do well, to achieve more and work harder.

And why I am so MIA again?! a lot of things are happening lately so I am so lost. But I am getting the hang of if na. Imagine a week without a rest day? I can't imagine! nakakaloka because hindi ako sanay na walang sabath (signs of aging!), nakaka-depress because I have little time to spend and play with D and R during weekends, and honestly I am so overwhelmed with all the things that I need and must learn for the next two months.

I admit there are times that I wanna walk-out... and sleep and eat and sleep. The devil in my head is telling me that I don't need what I am working, spending money and time for . But the angel said "You are working hard for it for 2 years and 2 months nalang susuko ka pa ba?! This is for your own personal development and your family's future". Loka-loka lang ano?!

And thankfully, my sanity is back. I am back and I am willing to go back to track. I need to escape to my comfort zone now. It's killing me and making me expire soon.  I need to act now.

And now I am holding on to what my professor told us last meeting. All we need is 3D. And thats exactly what I need.

1. DISCIPLINE - I know! I always come to classes late and go home early. Thank you so much to my friends/classmates who reserve seats for me and kept me updated to important announcements I always miss.  I have a study plan that is left untouched for a week now. R hated me for making him buy lots of books that until now neatly covered in our room. And as much as I want to study the time I reached home, I have D who wants to play with mommy and sleep in my comfort so nakakatulog na din ako until morning. I have a lot of downloaded instructional videos that are left unwatched. What will I do?

2. DETERMINATION - This, I know I have a lot! R and baby D are my source of determination. Whenever I am so tired to read and study I just think of our future. Really helps a lot.

3. DEDICATION - Until now, I'm in doubt. I love to teach, but I am not still sure if I am fit for that. But, I wanna do it to prove something for myself. This is for me. I wanna prove to myself that I can do it.

And I know, I will do it with His guidance. I should not be afraid. I can do it.
